Yoga for Health

FALL SESSION 2010 September 14 - December 9, 2010

These Iyengar style classes include instruction in postures (asanas) to increase flexibility and strength. Classes include conscious breathing (pranayama) and relaxation. Over time, and with practice, the effects of your yoga condition your body, help maintain and build bone density and help to quiet your mind. We pay particular attention to the alignment of your body, since personal fitness is often reflected in correct posture and proper alignment of bone and muscle. When you learn to stand tall from thestrength of your legs and to lift your spine and expand your chest, you allow fulluse of your lungs and maintain and increase length in your body. (This will frequently relieve back pain). The Iyengar system of hatha yoga not onlystretches and strengthens your physical body but rejuvenates your internal organs and glands by helping your body to rid itself of toxins and other impurities. This conditioning and cleansing of your physical body allows your mind to become calmer and improves your ability to relax and concentrate.

I have been a continuing yoga student since 1974, taking instruction from a wide variety of teachers, mostly, but not exclusively, Iyengar teachers. I have been teaching hatha yoga in suburban Maryland continuously since 1987.

My yoga training includes:

  • classes in India and the U.S. with B.K.S. Iyengar and classes with Gita Iyengar
  • continuing Iyengar yoga teacher training
  • classes with senior Iyengar teachers (John Schumacher, Patricia Walden, Felicity Green, Gabriella Giubilaro, Mary Dunn, Ramanand Patel, and George Purvis)
  • practice teaching and assisting senior Iyengar yoga instructors (ongoing)
  • classes with non-Iyengar hatha yoga instructors
